I encourage you to browse the resources of the Tutor/Mentor Connection and see which you might apply in your own efforts.

While we're based in Chicago we've hosted a conference every May and November since 1993 and it has been attended by many groups from Michigan and the Detroit area.

In the Tutor/Mentor Institute section of the T/MC we provide strategies for collaboration and leadership that are aimed to enlist businesses to support volunteer-involvement in tutor/mentor programs in Chicago, Detroit, NYC and other cities more consistently than they are now supported.

We maintain a database of Chicago programs, which means anyone can sort by zip code to learn what programs are in what parts of the city. If you have a similar database for Detroit, it can serve the same goal.

Over the next six weeks as school is getting set to start, we need to do all we can to increase the number of leaders who say "be a volunteer" and point to forums and web directories where people can shop for where they might volunteer, or provide dollars to support volunteer involvement. That would mean more kids are with mentors as school is starting in September.

If we can link our messages, then such support can benefit programs in multiple cities. Let me know how we might help or answer any questions about the material I've pointed to.
